Remodelling unlocks flexible open-plan living

The split-level ground floor of this Edwardian family house within the Highgate Conservation Area was extended and remodelled, transforming formerly drab cellular rooms into a dramatic sequence of inter-connected living spaces.

The kitchen sits at the heart of the house, opening onto the dining room at the front and overlooking the living room in the extension to the rear. This, in turn, opens onto a paved terrace and the garden beyond via a full wall of sliding glass doors.

Two strategically placed rooflights in the green roof of the extension ensure daylight penetrates right into the centre of the house, while a series of sliding pocket doors allow the various spaces to be closed off or opened up as the occasion demands.

On the upper floors the project included the refurbishment of two bathrooms, the creation of a laundry room and the installation of a new rooflight which floods the stairway with natural light.
